In charged times, Kendrick Lamar subversive in subtlety
Sun, 24 Jul 2016 14:15:37 -0400
Kendrick Lamar wrote the unofficial anthem of the Black Lives Matter movement yet, in charged times, the rap star found he could be mellow while staying salient. Lamar, whose live schedule has been surprisingly sparse since he triumphed at the Grammy Awards in February, on Saturday headlined the inaugural Panorama festival, a New York expansion by promoters of Coachella in California. At the Grammys, he entered as a prisoner chained to fellow African American men and, earlier at the Black Entertainment Television Awards, rapped atop a vandalized police car.

IOC decides against blanket doping ban for Russia
Sun, 24 Jul 2016 14:05:39 -0400
The International Olympic Committee on Sunday decided against hitting Russia with a blanket ban from the Rio Games over state-run doping but laid out unprecedented eligibility conditions for individual Russian athletes. IOC president Thomas Bach said the body stopped short of an historic outright ban in order to protect the rights of clean Russian competitors hoping to take part at the Games which start in two weeks. The IOC faced global calls to act after a World Anti-Doping Agency report last week detailed a massive cheating programme directed by the Russian sports ministry with help from the FSB state intelligence agency.
IOC decision a blow to clean athletes: anti-doping officials
Sun, 24 Jul 2016 14:03:26 -0400
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) failed to demonstrate strong leadership on a sad day for clean sport when it declined to ban Russian athletes from the Rio Olympics, anti-doping officials said on Sunday. "The IOC Executive Committee has failed to confront forcefully the findings of evidence of state-sponsored doping in Russia corrupting the Russian sport system," Joseph de Pencier, CEO of iNADO, the 59-member global Institute of National Anti-Doping Organisations, said in a statement. "It has ignored the calls of clean athletes, a multitude of athlete organizations, and of leading National Anti-Doping Organisations, to do the right thing by excluding Russia from the Rio Olympic Games," he added.
Turks mass to condemn coup amid torture claims
Sun, 24 Jul 2016 13:57:30 -0400
Many thousands of flag-waving Turks massed Sunday for the first cross-party rally to condemn the coup attempt against President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, amid a purge of suspected state enemies. Istanbul's Taksim square was transformed into a sea of red national flags in what was dubbed a "democracy festival" that brought together the ruling Islamic-conservative and opposition secular camps. In stark contrast to the broadly celebratory mood in Istanbul, human rights group Amnesty International in London claimed it had "credible evidence" of the beating and torture of detainees.
